Last time I wrote about the Bogarden initiative and the changes to the recycling program in Charleston County. Because it is complicated for everyone, including myself, to decifer what is and what is not acceptable by the countie’s recycling facility, below is a link to the latest newsletter from the Environmental Management division of Charleston County. The four page pdf shows in more detail what is and is not accepted, curbside calendar and instructions based on six zones as well as dropsites and convenience centers. Recycling depends on resident involvement and restricting recycling based on pick-up days just doesn’t seem very motivating. Greener Corners out of New Jersey is a company that provides community, business and school recycling stations at no cost, with local advertising covering the expenses, even offering a percentage of the proceeds back to the community. A different company I came across is midpoint international and they offer recycled recycling stations/bins.
I am not trying to push for a specific company, brand or even type of recycling station per se, what I do see is an opportunity based on these companies and ideas to create a simpler and more inviting way to recycle in Charleston. A neighborhood such as Cannonborough Elliottborough seems to me as the perfect place for a pilot program of block recycling versus curbside. Please write us with comments or suggestions. Thank you!
