I am always excited to discover a new product or solution that can help save energy and a few dollars to homeowners. While browsing for such products I came across tubular skylights. As the name implies these are skylights that are installed in a roof of a house or commercial building, the difference from common skylights lies in their shape and size. Typical skylights are somewhat large square-shaped parts of a roof that allow sunlight to enter the building. Skylights are great because they do allow sunlight to illuminate a room, therefore reducing the need and use of artificial lighting. On the other hand, there is a concern regarding heat due to the direct sunlight as well as the limitiation associated with not allowing for light control by the homeowner (e.g. glare on tv’s).
The tubular design on the other hand allows for sunlight to enter the building, but because the tube can be installed (between the roof and the ceiling) at an angle, there is no direct sunlight, therefore no heat associated with it. Different companies offer different options, some even include a dimming option so the homeowner can control the amount of light entering the house at any time during the day.
